First circular of III Conference of OSLE-India

St. Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad hosts III International Conference of Organisation for Studies in Literature and Environment-India (OSLE-India) on Land, Culture and Knowledge Systems at St. Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad on  4 & 5 January, 2008

St. Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad

The beckoning of a divine calling led to the establishment of a congregation of the Sisters of St Anne, Guntur.  The Sisters under the leadership of their founder Thatipatri Gnanamma pioneered the concept of women empowerment through primary, secondary and collegiate education.   The Society forayed into higher education with St. Ann's Junior college in 1981 in Hyderabad.  Over the years the institution has introduced several UG and PG courses in Science, Humanities and Commerce.  The college enjoys excellent reputation in the twin cities with an 'A' Grade conferred by NAAC.  The institution always adapts itself to the changing trends in every sphere of knowledge.  One such venture is this collaboration with OSLE-India.

OSLE- India

OSLE-India is a forum for promoting ecocriticism, especially in India and also in other Asian countries. Today 'ecocriticism' has come to mean not only 'the application of ecology and ecological principles to the study of literature,' but also the theoretical approach to the interrelational web of natural, cultural and supernatural phenomena.

Conference Theme

Land, the central principle of ecocriticism, plays a crucial role in our understanding of human society, particularly, such social issues as poverty, hunger, tribal displacement and environmental destruction among many others. Since ecocriticism involves criticism of culture or cultural texts, land has to be seen in relation to culture also. Though knowledge systems will be part of culture, they find special mention in the topic of the conference because in the discussion of land and culture, we need to tap the resources of not only academic disciplinary practices (humanities & sciences), but also knowledge resources available outside of the academy, such as folk and tribal knowledge as well.

Some topics for presentation:

Ø     Land & critical theories:
Land as critical principle – tinai – Bioregionalism – Nativism

Ø     Influence of land on culture
Anthropogeographical approach – Human geographical insights –
Bioregion – Nativism – Sacred geography – Sacred grove –
        kalam/mandala(m)/(I)yantra(m)/kolam/rangoli – vaastu

Ø     Land as Home (Oikos)
        Landlessness – Displacement – Migration – Refugee – Invasion –
        Indigenousness/Aboriginality/Rootedness

Ø     Land Ethics
Land Rights – Leopold’s theory of Land Rights – Ownership of land

Ø     Physical and Metaphysical Dimensions of land
Can there be imaginary land? – Land, Place & Space

Though “space” has become an established critical category (as in Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space), this conference will focus on land rather than on related concepts like “space” and “world” among others. Therefore, papers on land-related concepts will also necessarily focus on land.
