Graduate Student Mentoring Program

The ASLE mentoring program is intended to provide graduate students or recent graduates with mentors. The program offers students at institutions lacking faculty expertise in their areas of specialty mentors to provide research assistance, to give career guidance, and/or to serve as outside readers on their dissertation committees. If you are an ASLE member, and would like to work with a mentor, please fill out and send in the application form.

The mentoring program supports the ASLE community in additional ways:

• We facilitate collaboration within and across languages, disciplines and literary traditions. Whether you are an ASLE member interested in identifying others working in your area(s) of intellectual interest, or a student or scholar in any ASLE branch seeking contact information for scholars working in other areas of the field, let us know how me might be able to help;

• We sponsor individual meetings at the biennial ASLE conference to provide new members of ASLE the opportunity to talk with an experienced members of the organization;

• We sponsor sessions at the biennial conference designed for graduate students seeking more information about the profession of English, issues associated with graduate training, ecocriticism and environmental studies, teaching and scholarship, as well as careers outside the academy.

 If you have any questions or queries about the mentoring program I welcome your interest. To learn more about how mentoring relationships can work, please read the archive of mentoring narratives by clicking the link below.
And if you have already received a mentor, do let me know how it is working out. Have you requested and received the help you needed? What has been the best part of your relationship with your mentor? Have there been any problems? Finally, do let me know if there is anything I can do to make your partnership more productive, or if you have suggestions for how the mentoring program might be improved.

My best wishes,
