Ehrlich, Gretel, The Solace of Open Spaces. Penguin 1985. A city weary woman flees from her life and her lover who is dying from cancer, and becomes a cattle woman and conservationist on a cattle ranch in Wyoming where she finds love and nature. This is some of the clearest, toughest, most powerful prose in print today. There is no vivid writing, but it will stir most readers.
