Sustainable Campuses

Dear all,

I have agreed to be on a committee at University Center Rochester (Minnesota)that includes my institution— Rochester Technical and Community College —and a branch of Winona State University. Both schools are part of MnSCU system – Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. The President of MnSCU has issued a statement that says in part:

“We believe colleges and universities must exercise leadership in their communities and throughout society by modeling ways to minimize global warming emissions, and by providing the knowledge and educated graduates to achieve climate neutrality.  Campuses that address the climate challenge by reducing global warming emissions and by integrating sustainability into their curriculum will better serve their students and meet their social mandate to help create a thriving, ethical and civil society.”

The goal of the committee at UCR, I have been told, is to “to create a plan to integrate sustainability into the fabric of the college.” I am not sure exactly what they mean by this, but I am glad that this first step has been taken. (Before this year, for example, we did not recycle paper on our campus!)

My questions are: Do any of you have any advice for me as part of this committee, for the committee, or for this endeavor? Do you know of similar efforts at other institutions? How effective have those efforts been? Do you know of any good resources for information?

Thanks for any and all advice / suggestions.

Katherine Hanson

Dear Katherine,

You may want to look at the book Planet U by Michael M'Gonigle and Justine Stark of the University of Victoria.  It examines what universities in Europe and N. America have done and can do to serve as catalysts for sustainability, both on campus and in their wider communities.

There are a number of links to web sites addressing sustainability in higher education on Goddard College's environmental studies resources web site, "George." Just point your browser to http://web.goddard.edu/ESresources

Click on "Directory of Resources" and then on "Sustainability."

Katherine,

ASSHE is a fabulous, relatively new organization that is a great place to learn what's happening in this arena around the country.  Check out their web site http://www.aashe.org/index.php, sign on to their weekly newsletter, and you'll discover lots.

Good luck!   Rochelle

Katherine,

I'm co-chairing our new environmental initiatives committee at Weber State and have been working a lot recently to find answers to the questions you asked. Two books I found very helpful are:

Check out the Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC. They have constructed a state of the art green school building right near the Capital where it is serving as a model many congressmen visit.

Greetings,

A colleague here at University of Texas at Arlington, Stacy Alaimo, forwarded some of the ASLE discussion on campus sustainability. I've recently agreed to co-chair our new President's Sustainability Committee. You may be interested in the attached list of resources, which I've been compiling for the last year or so.

Dear Professor Hanson:

Your request for information came to me via the ASLE list-serv.  Although I may not be the person most suited to answer your question -- I'm a literature professor and faculty dean -- I do know that our tiny college has made a profound commitment to sustainability since its founding 35 years ago.  What kind of information does your committee need?  Is this more of a research or a practical project?  What's your time frame?  At College of the Atlantic we recycle all paper (and use recycled goods), we've had zero-waste graduation, we're building green housing, we use only non-toxic building and cleaning materials, we have a Director of Sustainability, and there are policies in place to insure that all college activities, buildings, and operations use the best environmental practices currently available.  We were the first college in the U.S. to pledge ! carbon-neutrality.  Our president is deeply committed to this effort and might be a good person to contact, as might our Director of Sustainability or Director of Buildings and Grounds.  It would help if I knew a little more about your needs -- we also have faculty involved in green business practices, environmental activism, and various aspects of ecological and environmental study.

Please let me know more if our experience might be of interest.

Sincerely,

Karen E. Waldron, Ph.D.

I wonder if it wouldn't be useful to post all of the information about sustainable campuses on the ASLE website?

Dear All:

I would also like to request more shared information on sustainable campuses, or even an ASLE sponsored site. Trinity has just formed a Presidential Task Force on this very question and we should be meeting very soon. It would be great to have more resources from ASLE about such committees, or perhaps a place for conversations about goals, experiences, etc. I have been gathering websites, etc., and all the materials sent by this listserv as well as all the materials forwarded to those of us on the committee, but a single location with links and comments would be very helpful. It seems there is a confused wealth of information online. Guidance and suggestions from ASLE could be a productive source to bring to our first meeting. The collective wisdom from ASLE would be much appreciated here!

Best, Heather
