SFRA Panel at ASLE 2019 on Kim Stanley Robinson

Deadline: August 24, 2018
Contact: Bridgitte Barclay, SFRA

Science Fiction Research Association (SFRA) Panel at ASLE 2019

Panel Title: Kim Stanley Robinson: Fires and Floods

Panel Description: Kim Stanley Robinson’s speculative fiction works are frequently referred to as utopian. Yet these near and distant futures and pasts are anything but simple paradises. On the contrary, Robinson explores the complex intricacies of social change through his formidable range of imagined scenarios, from settlements on Mercury, Mars, and the Moon to New York City underwater to life on Earth 30,000 years ago. Members of the panel bring complementary investigations of different Robinson novels to articulate collectively what constitutes their aesthetic and political force as well as the role fiction can play in confronting both acute and chronic ecological challenges.

If you’d like to join this panel, please email a brief 250-word abstract of your proposed KSR paper to Andy Hageman (hagean03 at and Bridgitte Barclay (bbarclay at by August 24th, 2018.

“Paradise on Fire” is the ASLE 2019 theme. One of the plenary addresses will be given by Nnedi Okorafor, and the ASLE call for panels invokes Margaret Atwood and Octavia Butler, so the event is primed for SF presentations.
