Social Justice, Speciesism, and Food Studies: The Next Frontier

This session welcomes papers that address social justice, speciesism, and food studies in contemporary culture, philosophy, academia, and literature from an ecocritical perspective. While a dialogue on social justice is growing in scope in the US and Italy, seeking to expose forms of exploitation and challenge notions of race, gender, and ability, it often stops short of extending inclusivity to other-than-human animals. And while ethical veganism and anti-speciesism have become the subjects of important debate, leading to the influential fields of Critical Animal Studies, Animal Philosophy, and Animal Law, the role that social justice, ethics, and activism play in our relation to other-than-human animals remains contradictorily excluded from discussions of Food Studies. This session takes an ethical look at speciesism and in particular seeks to explore the notion of inclusivity in calls for social justice that acknowledge racial and gender oppression but fail to acknowledge oppression based on species.
