Race, Place, and Migration in Afro-Latinx Literature and Visual Art

Proposed panel for NeMLA conference (Baltimore, March 2022)

This panel invites papers focused on the analysis of Afro-Latinx migratory dynamics as represented in Latin American art (films, plastic and visual art, live performances, and so on) and literature (such as novels, poems, plays, comics, visual poetry). Papers on the Caribbean, Centro America, South America, and Brazil are welcomed.

How can visual art and literature facilitate the understanding of the interconnections between race, social class, democracy, and the urban places where immigrants settle down? What are the geographical and architectural urban modifications provoked by Afro-Latinx diasporic movements? Is it possible to track the evolution of racial representation and the stratification of black migration by analyzing the history of Latin American urban settlements? The goal of this panel is to register the contemporary representations of the legacy of slave trade and sub-Saharan migration as represented in Afro-Latinx art and literature, while questioning processes of classification, mapping, and interpretation of black communities. In Latin American urban settlements, racial inequality is physically stressed by architectonic barriers and the distribution of the population is represented in geographical maps that reveal shocking social inequalities. In this setting, art and literature reflect the distinctive cultural role of urban environment in shaping the existence of its inhabitants, while denouncing issues of democracy, racism, and social justice.

Abstract Submission Deadline: September 30, 2021. Decisions on proposals will be made by October 15, 2021.

Instructions: For consideration, please upload your abstract (200-300 words in English) to NeMLA’s portal: https://www.cfplist.com/nemla/Home/S/19490.
