Dig It! Gardening for Social Change

Deadline: January 2, 2023

Are there any other ASLE/AESS folks out there who have been involved in starting organic vegetable gardens and/or pollinator sanctuaries on their campuses or in their communities who would like to be part of a panel for the upcoming conference that explores aspects of that experience? Such projects help to “reclaim the commons” in numerous and joyous ways. Gardens and pollinator sanctuaries reclaim space on college campuses for the nurturance of our spirits. They provide spaces for genuine experiential learning related to sustainable climate solutions, especially around agricultural practices and food security. They offer sites for collaborative teaching and learning linking the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences. They offer ways to reclaim connections between academic campuses and the larger non-academic communities that they are a part of. And they reclaim college as a place where students can engage in the vital work of social change as they prepare to address the needs of our eco-future. Panelists can explore any aspect of this theme, including offering nuts and bolts and how-to nuggets. If you are interested, please send an email asap to Gretchen.legler@maine.edu. The deadline for panel submission is Jan. 10, but we can do it!  Get me something by January 8-9.
