Panel proposed at the 2023 ASLE + AESS Conference: “Reclaiming the Commons”

The idea of the commons begins from the belief that capitalism is no longer viable as a socio-economic system and that the contemporary state no longer functions in a manner that meets population needs. The process of thinking and implementing system-wide change beyond late liberal market and state implies an emergent shift in the definition and management of risk that has hitherto subtended forms of governance, social organization, and community life. Traditionally, risk has been defined as the anticipation of catastrophes resulting from different facets of industrial modernity—many of which emerge from and uphold corporate and state agendas. Recent critical risk scholarship, however, has posited the need for a reconceptualization of risk not as a state of anticipation but as a social construct with the power to organize society and social futures.
This 2023 ASLE + AESS conference panel will explore how reclaiming the commons prompts a rethinking of the concept, evaluation, and management of risk. Forms of scholarly engagement, creative work, and community work are invited to reframe and/or reconceptualize traditional notions of risk and risk management. How does reclaiming the commons decolonize or ‘trouble’ risk? What does a decolonized conceptualization of risk ‘look’ like, and what are its principles and goals?
Topics for exploration may include, but are not limited to: risk and community climate change resilience; risk and affect; risk and science technology, technonatures, and/or posthumanism(s); risk challenged or rewritten by decoloniality, activism, emancipation, revolution; risk challenged or rewritten by the Capitalocene, the Cthulhuscene, feminisms, and/or new materialisms.

This call is for a pre-formed panel, which will be submitted for consideration to the conference organizers at the end of December. Information on the panel’s potential acceptance will follow.
