ASA 2022: Cultures of the U.S.–Mexico Borderlands
Twenty-five years after Gloria Anzaldúa published Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, the U.S.–Mexico border is still “una herida abierta where the Third World grates against the first and bleeds.” As Anzaldúa would have predicted, this “bleed[ing]” is both violent and vital, destructive and constructive; anytime “a scab forms it hemorrhages again, the lifeblood of two worlds merging to form a third country—a border culture.” However, in ways Anzaldúa failed to see, this “blood” does not flow from a single Chicanx “country,” but rather ...

As our natural environments become increasingly vulnerable to the realities of climate change, so too do our personal and communal environments experience strain. In thinking about conversations of potential irreversible climate collapse, we don’t always ruminate on the ways in which our social, economic, political, cultural, creative, and academic environments are increasingly impacted by looming devastation. Thus, the varying environments of ...

Watersheds: 2022 ASLE Symposium
2022 ASLE Symposium: Watersheds June 24-26, 2022 University of Delaware
In hydrographic terms, watersheds are stretches of land that divide bodies of water from others. As the vast Chesapeake Bay watershed makes clear – draining the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia – watersheds congregate and build; obviate political boundaries; blur lines between the terrestrial and aquatic, fresh and salt; seep and produce; teem and transform. Temporality in the watershed is also messy: times sink, sediment, and circulate as the past ...
