NEMLA 2022: Poetry and Plant-thinking

Roundtable CFP for NeMLA 2022: Baltimore, MD, March 10-13, 2022

According to Michael Marder, “Plant-thinking” refers to “the non-cognitive, non-ideational, and non-imagistic mode of thinking proper to plants” or “thinking without the head.” Taking seriously the idea that plant thinking enables new perspectives on human encounters with the vegetal condition, this roundtable explores the vegetal poetics that engage with the agency, imaginaries, or futurities of—and the human entanglements with—plant lifeforms. Representative poets and writers in this vein might include Janice Lee, Evelyn Reilly, Adjua ...

NEMLA 2022 CFP: Uses and Misuses of Care in a Critical Posthumanist Framework

Panel CFP for NeMLA 2022: Baltimore, MD, March 10-13, 2022

Critical posthumanism is situated at the intersection of posthuman studies, ecocriticism, technology studies, and ethics, where human exceptionalism is rejected in favor of an ontologically diverse approach to human existence. Here, the normative anthropocentric view of the world is replaced with a more immanent and equitable paradigm where human subjects are asked to reconsider their relationship with others, especially non-human others who share their environment, in a relational way. This approach demands that the ...

Making Kin in Early Modern France: Interspecies Ecologies of Care (NeMLA 2022, Baltimore)

53rd Annual Convention of the Northeast Modern Language Association (March 10-13, 2022, Baltimore, MD) Panel: Making Kin in Early Modern France: Interspecies Ecologies of Care

This panel seeks to consider how the works of French writers and thinkers of the early modern period and the eighteenth century envision entanglements and interconnections between humans and their nonhuman “kin,” whether animal, vegetable, or other forms of life. The feminist science studies scholar Donna Haraway defines “kin” not as a solely biological concept but as a method of redefining ...

Re-Thinking Agency: Non-Anthropocentric Approaches

Re-Thinking Agency: Non-Anthropocentric Approaches 3–5 February 2022 (Deadline for abstract submission: 15 November 2021) University of Warsaw and via Zoom worldwide

Keynote lecture: Karen Barad (University of California, Santa Cruz)

A common-sensical definition of agency is “the ability to act in a given environment”. This definition, however, requires clarification of what “acting”, “ability”, and even “environment” are. Consequently, the definition suggests a set of questions that should be probed further. For a long time, acting and agency were seen as components of a metaphysically and religiously founded patriarchal order and ...
