In 2014, ASLE launched a three year pilot program to offer members of the association support through modest grants. Our funding ran out at the end of 2016, but we have identified emergency funding through small donations and conference revenues to keep these programs active for 2017. Applications grants are now being accepted, the deadline is December 31, 2017.

ASLE Subvention Grants support innovative projects in ecocriticism and the environmental humanities. We are especially interested in projects of a scholarly and/or creative nature that engage with new media, aim at fostering intercultural or interdisciplinary exchange, or seek to bring insights from the environmental humanities to a non-academic public. Projects such as art installations, documentary film projects, digital humanities web projects as well as book or article publication are eligible, and funds may be used to cover costs such as publication and dissemination, color reproductions, translation, or web/internet expenses.  Accepted proposals will be funded up to a maximum of $2,000 each.

ASLE Translation Grants support work in ecocriticism from international scholars translating books or other substantial projects (such as long articles) into English. Proposed books should be ecocriticism or fiction/non-fiction with a clear relationship to environmental issues, and must already have been published in a language other than English. We encourage authors to seek English-language publishers, particularly in the U.S., Canada, or Great Britain. Funding for accepted works to be translated will be up to a possible maximum of $1,000 each. We award up to three translation grants each year.

ASLE Community Grants build connections between the environmental humanities and place-based nonprofit environmental organizations working outside the academy. Projects will foreground the intersection between local efforts to address issues of environmental degradation and injustice and the role of representation and rhetoric. We are also interested in projects enabling ASLE to connect with the environmental struggles of the biennial conference locale. Funds may be used to cover the costs of public presentations or exhibitions (permanent or temporary), informational materials, literary and artistic productions, or interactive digital projects.  Accepted proposals will be funded up to a maximum of $5,000 each.
