“Environmental Apocalypse Discourse: An Interdisciplinary Exploration in Human Sciences” is the title we selected for an edited book. This ground breaking volume will enrich scholarly discussions surrounding the intersection of discourse and apocalypse vis-à-vis the ecological crisis.

The concept of the environmental apocalypse has gained significant attention in recent years, as the climate crisis becomes increasingly evident and alarming. We believe that apocalyptic environmental discourse is not confined to any single field of human activity, but it extends to various disciplines, including but not limited to politics, economics, science, education, and media. In politics, it influences policy-making and international relations. Economically, it impacts investment strategies and market behaviors. Scientifically, it drives research agendas and technological innovation. In education, it shapes the development of curricula and pedagogical approaches. Lastly, in media, it informs news dissemination and popular culture.

This introduction is a brief overview of the themes that this edited book will explore within multiple fields of study including environmental sociology, political science, linguistics, literature, media, and cultural studies. The environmental apocalypse can be understood as a figure of discourse that embodies thoughts, practices, relationships, forms, experiences, esthetics, or themes that have portrayed or imagined a catastrophic end to the world or a significant transformation of human society. This discourse, often characterized by alarming predictions of catastrophic outcomes, serves as a powerful narrative tool to highlight the urgent need for action. However, it also raises important questions about the role of fear and despair in motivating societal change.

The issue of “Apocalyptic Environmental Discourse: An Interdisciplinary Exploration in Human Sciences” intersects with several disciplines within the human sciences and linguistics. Contributions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

By doing so, it seeks to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the climate crisis and its potential solutions, as well as to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration in addressing this global challenge.
