POETICS OF EVERYDAY LIFE: ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Before the burgeoning field of humanistic studies on animals, intellectuals associated with different cultures at different times expressed their concern about the disturbing relationship between human society and non-humans. Sociological theory, an initial criticism that manifested the exploitation of animals in human societies, defended the thesis that the domination of animals is closely associated with the domination of human beings, especially women, racial and ethnic minorities. These premises were debated among the main figures of the Frankfurt School, Marx Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse and none other than Walter Benjamin’s interdisciplinary approaches. They all criticized Western instrumentalist thinking in relation to animals and, together, defended the exercise of compassion for animals. Based on these essentially theoretical assumptions, the V International Congress of Literature and Ecocritics and the 3rd Biennial Conference of ASLE Brasil will welcome critical interdisciplinary proposals capable of establishing dialogues based on the Frankfurt School’s thinking and Contemporary Animal Studies, which may lead us to consider the theoretical defense of non-human animals. Critics like Derrida, Donna Haraway, Cary Wolfe and others can also be considered as starting points for reconceptualizing the differences between non-humans and humans, otherness and subjectivity. In this way, the main objective of this congress is to lead us to reflect on the brutalization of non-humans, as well as in the development of a more rational and just society.
