CFP for Panel “The Art of Persistence: Migration and Ecocriticism in Literature and Visual Arts”

This panel invites submissions that explore how climate refugees, asylum seekers, and economic migrants affect and are affected by the environment, and the ways in which these dynamics are reflected in literature and visual arts.

Please submit an abstract of 250 words directly to Nicole Bonino (Chair of the Panel) nb3hf@virginia.edu. The closing date for the receipt of proposals is March 15, 2020. Decisions on proposals will be made by March 22, 2020.

Bio of the Chair: Nicole Bonino is a doctoral candidate and teaching assistant in the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese at the University of Virginia. Her area of specialty is contemporary Latin American literature, with a comparative focus on migration movements and an interdisciplinary interest in the field of Environmental Humanities. Within the theoretical framework of ecocriticism, her research examines the reasons why people emigrate, the ways in which they modify space, and the rhetorical and metaphorical ways in which the urban and oceanic landscapes are represented in literature. She is currently a fellow of the Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation, the Center for the Americas, the Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures, and the Hispanic Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi.
