ASLE Seeks Associate Editors for ISLE Journal

ISLE Call for Associate Editors

ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment is the official journal of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment. ISLE seeks to explore the relation between human beings and the natural world, and publishes articles from literary scholars, environmental historians, specialists in the visual and performing arts, environmental philosophers, geographers, economists, ecologists, and scholars in other fields relevant to “literature and environment.” The journal also publishes poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction pertinent to its thematic focus.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the winners of our recent elections:

Stacy Alaimo and Jeffrey Jerome Cohen will serve as co-presidents, Andrea Knutson and Julietta Singh will be the new members of the Executive Council, and Kristin George Bagdanov will be the (junior) Graduate Student Liaison.  All terms begin on January 1, 2018.

ASLE 2017 Conference Reports

There were many activities on the 2017 ASLE Conference program in addition to concurrent sessions, and a number of interest groups met during the week in Detroit. Applications for 2017 ASLE Grants Now Open

In 2014, ASLE launched a three year pilot program to offer members of the association support through modest grants. Our funding ran out at the end of 2016, but we have identified emergency funding through small donations and conference revenues to keep these programs active for 2017. Applications grants are now being accepted, the deadline is December 31, 2017.

ASLE Announces 2017 Writing Award Winners

ASLE is very excited to announce the winners of the 2017 ASLE Book and Paper Awards. The awards, in the areas of ecocriticism and environmental creative writing, recognize excellence in the field. The official presentation of certificates and $500 cash prizes for books, and $100 for graduate student papers, was made during the Authors’ Reception at the 2017 ASLE Biennial Conference at Wayne State University in Detroit, on Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

2017 ASLE Book Award Finalists Announced

Judges have announced the finalists for the 2017 ASLE Book Awards. The ASLE book awards in the areas of ecocriticism and environmental creative writing recognize excellence in the field.

Winners will be announced in early June, and the official presentation will be at the Twelfth ASLE Biennial Conference, to be held at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, from June 20-24, 2017. Eligible submissions were books published by ASLE and affiliate members since the last awards cycle (2015-2016).  Congratulations to our short-listed authors:

In Memoriam: John Felstiner

John Felstiner, Stanford Professor and poetry scholar, dies at age 80

It is with great sadness that we share the news that longtime ASLE member Louis John Felstiner, Jr., died on February 24, 2017 at the age of eighty. Professor Felstiner was a translator, literary critic, teacher, poet, and ardent environmentalist. He is survived by Mary Lowenthal Felstiner, his wife of over fifty years, their two children, Sarah and Alek, and two grandchildren, Brayden and Asa.
